STARKS, Maine — A woman who apparently was assaulted early Thursday wound up going to jail with her husband when sheriff’s deputies discovered she had a warrant for passing bad checks.

The series of events started when police were called to a Starks residence at 2 a.m. Thursday for a report of an assault involving Chris Gulnick, 46, and Sanda Gulnick, 42, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

When Sandra attempted to call police, Chris took away his wife’s cellphone, Lancaster said, and she wound up fleeing to a neighbor’s home to call 911.

Deputy Mike Pike went to the home and an investigation revealed that Sandra Gulnick had been assaulted and she had a warrant for failing to appear on the charge of negotiating a worthless instrument, so both husband and wife were taken to the Somerset County Jail, Lancaster said.

Chris was charged with domestic violence assault and obstructing the report of a crime and remains locked up, while Sandra was released on bail.
