BANGOR, Maine — A pedestrian killed Saturday night was struck on Vermont Avenue and dragged to the Airport Mall parking, Bangor police said Sunday..

The name of the deceased is not expected to be released until Monday, said Lt. Paul Edwards.

Vermont Avenue is a short street that runs from Union Street to the rotary at the entrance to the Bangor campus of the University of Maine at Augusta and the Maine Public Broadcasting Network studios and offices.

“It appears to have happened on Vermont Avenue and the driver continued to drive to the parking lot of the Hannaford Supermarket,” he said. “The driver did not notice he had struck someone until the driver got to the parking lot.”

Edwards declined to identify the driver but said the accident continues to be investigated. He said the driver was a Canadian operating a vehicle with Canadian license plates.

The distance from Vermont Avenue to the Airport Mall appeared to be between one half and three-fourths of a mile, according to mapquest.com.

Police received a report of a car-pedestrian accident in the Hannaford parking lot at the Airport Mall at approximately 7:58 p.m., Sgt. Catherine Rumsey said late Friday. The pedestrian was deceased when Bangor police and fire crews arrived at the scene.

A decision about whether charges would be filed will be made by the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office after police complete their investigation.
