UMaine’s James, Perillo named Football Championship Subdivision All-Americans

RICHMOND, Va. — University of Maine senior cornerback Kendall James and senior tight end Justin Perillo have been recognized as Football Championship Subdivision All-Americans by The Sports Network.

James was named to the All-America first team, while Perillo was a second-team choice.

The two Black Bears were among 11 Colonial Athletic Association stars to be named to the All-America squads. The list also includes Towson offensive lineman Eric Pike and running back Terrance West, William & Mary safety Jerome Couplin, and James Madison linebacker Stephon Robertson.

Chosen for the second team were W&M offensive lineman Matt Crisafi, Towson fullback Emmanuel Holder and cornerback Jordan Love and Delaware defensive lineman Zach Kerr. Towson linebacker Telvion Clark was placed on the third team.

A mainstay in the Black Bears’ secondary, James helped lead a defensive unit that allowed a league-low 165.4 passing yards per game. He finished the season with 34 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, to go with two interceptions, eight pass breakups and a blocked field goal.

UMaine’s active leader in games started at 37, James recorded his 100th career unassisted tackle earlier in the year.

Perillo was a key cog for the Black Bears’ offense at tight end, where he handled considerable blocking responsibilities in addition to his pass-catching skills.

Last month, he received his second straight All-CAA first-team award and third overall postseason honor from the conference. He had 39 catches for 490 yards and four touchdowns in 2013.

Cosgrove honored again

UMaine head coach Jack Cosgrove added another postseason honor as he has been named the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Bowl/Championship Division Head Coach of the Year.

Cosgrove, who finished third in voting for the prestigious Eddie Robinson Award given to the FCS national coach of the year, previously was named the Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year, the 2013 American Football Coaches Association FCS Region 1 Co-Coach of the Year and the New England Football Writers’ Association Jack Grinold New England Coach of the Year.

The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston awards banquet will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Westin Waltham Hotel.
