GRAY, Maine — While snow had stopped falling over much of the state by Wednesday morning, winter storm warnings remained in effect for Down East communities, according to the National Weather Service.

Washington County was under a winter storm warning through 1 p.m., according to the weather service.

The winter storm that churned into the state Tuesday night and into Wednesday hit coastal communities the hardest.

National Weather Service forecaster Tom Hawley said Camden received the most snowfall at 16 inches, while Hancock checked in with 12, Hope and Bass Harbor with 11, Machiasport and Union with 9½ and Saco with nine.

Bangor only saw approximately 1½ inches, Hawley said.
