UMaine football coach Jack Cosgrove places third in Eddie Robinson Award voting

ORONO, Maine — University of Maine head football coach Jack Cosgrove finished third in the voting for the prestigious Eddie Robinson Award, the results of which were announced Monday.

Cosgrove, in his 21st year directing the Black Bears, guided his team to a 10-3 record and the Colonial Athletic Association championship. It marked only the second time in program history that UMaine won 10 games in a season.

Cosgrove received 18 first-place votes and 260 points in the voting conducted among 147 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries.

Black Bears redshirt freshman Christophe Mulumba wound up sixth in the voting for the Jerry Rice Award given to the top Football Championship Subdivision rookie.

Craig Bohl, who has led North Dakota State to two straight national championships along with a 13-0 record and the top FCS national seed this season, was the Robinson Award winner. He garnered 42 first-place votes and 418 points while Dino Babers of Eastern Illinois (34, 370 points) was the runner-up.

Cosgrove’s Black Bears also earned a No. 5 national seed in the FCS and hosted a playoff game for the first time in school history. He previously was named the CAA Coach of the Year, the American Football Coaches Association FCS Region 1 Co-Coach of the Year and the New England Football Writers’ Association Jack Grinold New England Coach of the Year.

Mulumba, who hails from Montreal, received four first-place votes and 119 points in the voting for the Rice Award, which went to Eastern Washington wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

Mulumba made a team-high 118 tackles and posted two interceptions en route to CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year and All-CAA first-team accolades. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound linebacker also was an FCS All-New England first-team pick.
