Dexter man charged with assaulting wife, toddler

DEXTER, Maine — A Dexter man was arrested on a felony assault charge last week after allegedly punching his wife and knocking his 2-year-old daughter over.

The incident that led to the arrest of Jonathan Warren, 26, on Thursday of last week began around 11 a.m., when police received a report of a disturbance and possible assault at a Dexter Street residence, Dexter Police Chief Kevin Wintle said Thursday.

When Detective Lt. Alan Grinnell arrived, he learned that Warren and his wife of four years had been arguing and that the argument allegedly escalated to the point that Warren threatened to kill her and to burn the house down with her in it, Wintle said.

Wintle said the wife told Grinnell that Warren had pushed and kicked her and then punched her in the head three time with a closed fist. In the process of doing so, he reportedly knocked the child down to the ground. Because one of the victims was a child under the age of 6, the charge was elevated to Class C felony status, the chief said.

Neither victim required medical attention.

Warren, who fled the house after the incident, was arrested several hours later, when he was found at another Dexter residence.
