BATH, Maine — Police say a 12-year-old Bath boy admitted on Thursday that he made up the story that someone had attempted to abduct him on Wednesday.

The boy told police Wednesday that while he was walking on Middle Street, the driver of a van reached out of the vehicle, grabbed his arm and attempted to pull him inside the van.

He said he freed himself from the man’s grasp and fled to his residence.

But a police investigation led to the boy admitting his story was a hoax, Bath police Lt. Robert Savary said in a release Thursday.

“Bath Investigators have interviewed the boy at length, and he has admitted that his story was made up and it did not occur,” Savary said.

No charges have been filed, but investigators continue to talk with the boy and his family, Savary said.
