Students and faculty were advised by the university, located in northwest Washington, in an online alert to “shelter in place” while campus and D.C. police investigated.

Officer Hugh Carew of the D.C. police said officers were searching the campus for signs of a gunman after the emergency-911 report came in at about 7:45 p.m. EST, but as of 9 p.m., none had been found.
