Washington’s American University locked down after report of gunman

WASHINGTON — American University in Washington, D.C., was placed on a security lockdown on Wednesday as police investigated an unconfirmed report of a man with a gun on the campus, according to the university’s website and District of Columbia police.

Students and faculty were advised by the university, located in northwest Washington, in an online alert to “shelter in place” while campus and D.C. police investigated.

Officer Hugh Carew of the D.C. police said officers were searching the campus for signs of a gunman after the emergency-911 report came in at about 7:45 p.m. EST, but as of 9 p.m., none had been found.
