PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Fairfield University Stags outscored the Maine Black Bears 15-5 in the last eight minutes of the first half en route to an 80-59 women’s basketball victory in the championship game of the Brown Classic on Sunday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Stags (4-3) showed off offensive balance with Felicia DaCruz scoring 19 points and Brittany Obi-Tabot adding 18. Alexys Vazquez chipped in with 14 points and Kristin Schatzlein netted nine.

The Stags hit 58 percent of their shots from the field (32 of 25) and 44 percent from the 3-point arc (8 of 18) compared to Maine’s 42 percent from the field (23 of 54) and 32 percent from 3-point land (8 of 25).

Ashleigh Roberts sparked Maine (5-3) with 19 points and four rebounds while Liz Wood chipped in with 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Chantel Charles added eight points.

The Bears led for much of the first half, taking a 27-22 edge on a Wood 3-pointer with 8:09 left before the Stags’ pivotal surge.

Fairfield built its lead up to 13 three minutes into the second half, but the Bears cut it down to 50-43 when Roberts made a layup with 12:32 left in the game.

The Stags responded by steadily building the lead back up to 14 with eight minutes left and Maine would get no closer.

The Bears advanced to the final after Saturday’s 60-59 victory over tourney host Brown.

Sigi Koizar scored a game-tying layup with 1:03 remaining, then sank a free throw with two seconds left Saturday to lift the Bears by Brown.

The freshman guard from Austria, who was a Bangor Daily News All-Maine choice at Stearns High School of Millinocket in 2012, finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Roberts paced UMaine with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Wood posted 11 points and seven rebounds.

Lauren Clarke tossed in a game-high 19 points for 4-4 Brown. Sophie Bikofsky contributed 13 points and nine rebounds.

Wood scored four points during an early run that staked UMaine to an 11-4 lead and the vistors were up 33-28 at halftime.

The lead changed hands several times in the second half, but UMaine pulled it out.

Bikofsky’s layup put Brown ahead 59-57 with 1:12 left, but Koizar drove in for a layup nine seconds later to make it 59-all.

Clarke missed from the lane with 32 seconds remaining and UMaine worked the clock until Koizar was fouled with two ticks left. She made the first and missed the second, but Brown was unable to get a shot off.

Maine returns home to began America East action when it hosts Hartford on at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
