PORTLAND, Maine — Farmers packed up their carts and moved from Monument Square weeks ago. But that doesn’t mean locavores are out of luck as the snow begins to fly.
Portland’s winter farmers market opened Saturday, Dec. 7, in a new location. Moving closer to the maker’s avenue known as Anderson Street, more than 20 food purveyors and farmers will sell root vegetables, milk, cheese, wood-fired bread, meat, tempeh, honey, herbs, candles and herbal soaps from December to late April.
Now in its fifth year, Portland winter market’s new location at Urban Farm Fermentory’s Food and Culture Hub — shared by Bomb Diggity Bakery, Maine Pie Line and gourmet popsicle shop Pure Pops — is a natural fit. In the last year, this former industrial area has become a Brooklyn-like hive of startup activity.
The opening dovetails with a holiday makers market and the official launch of the fermentory’s new tasting room. In a speakeasy-like warren, 12 taps now pour mead, kombucha and cider.
The sprawling space with ample parking provides potential for “the up and coming greenhouse and room for food trucks,” said Lauren Pignatello, co-founder of the winter market formerly held at the Maine Irish Heritage Center.
Pignatello’s Swallowtail Cottage Apothecary also will be open during the market. She sells artisanal cheeses and holistic syrups and salves in a tiny corner shop that feels like a set from “Harry Potter.”
This Saturday, the Small Ax food truck will be on hand with breakfast sandwiches and Coffee By Design handing out free java to promote its new home on Diamond Street.
Portland Winter Farmer’s Market will be open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays; Holiday Maker’s Market is 3-7 p.m. this weekend only. Urban Farm Fermentory Food and Culture Hub is located at 200 Anderson St. in Portland.
