College roundup: Cahill propels St. Joseph’s past Colby for fifth victory

WATERVILLE — Morgan Cahill had game-highs of 24 points and 14 rebounds as Saint Joseph’s held off Colby 67-63 in women’s college basketball action Thursday night.

St. Joe’s improved to 5-2 while Colby slipped to 3-5.

Colby had a chance for the win when St. Joseph’s missed two free throws with 14 seconds left. However, the Mules committed a turnover and Lindsay Moore hit 1-for-2 from the foul line with four seconds left for a 65-63 lead and Mackenzie Dufour followed with two more free throws after a Colby turnover.

Abby Young added 15 points and six rebounds for the Monks while Mia Diplock had 12 points and three assists for the Mules. Donahue had nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

UMFK 95, UMM 29

At Fort Kent, UMaine-Fort Kent surged to a 35-point halftime lead en route to improving to 3-2.

Alexis Warne paced the Bengals with 14 points while Skyler Olsen and Taylor Boucher each added 12.

Vanessa Patterson scored 15 points to lead UM-Machias (2-7).

Men’s Basketball

MMA 82, UMA 74

At Castine, Maine Maritime’s Tyler Chiasson recorded career highs in points (26), rebounds (13) and assists (5) to lead the Mariners (1-5) by UMaine-Augusta (1-10).

Zachary Radcliffe and Jason Hatch each added 11 points and Garrett Libby 10 for the Mariners.

Brandon Rogers and Keith Chelsey recorded double-doubles for UMA. Rogers finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds and Chelsey had 10 points and 13 boards. Garrett Alley pumped in 15 points and Jesse Smith finished with 14.

UMM 69, UMFK 60

At Fort Kent, Elias Gutierrez scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and notched six assists to lead UMaine-Machias (6-3) by UM-Fort Kent (3-5).

Floyd Higgins added 14 points for UMM while Aaron Van Buren put in 13 and Brian Getchell netted 12.

James Givens paced UMFK with 18 points, Jorge Matesanz put in 12 and Fred Sanchez had 11.

Bates 88, Colby 76

At Waterville, Graham Safford pumped in 26 points and dished nine assists as Bates (6-1) took control at the end of the first half and went on to beat Colby (4-2).

Safford entered the game averaging 19.2 points and shot 10-for-20 from the field. He also had five rebounds and a pair of steals.

Patrick Stewart led Colby with a double-double at 24 points and 11 rebounds.

St. Joseph’s 92, Suffolk 70

At Boston, Saint Joseph’s (3-4) used a balanced scoring attack to cruise by Suffolk (3-5).

Eleven different players would register on the scoresheet for the Monks, highlighted by a 27-point effort by senior Matthew Medeiros. Nicholas Jobin added 24 points and 13 rebounds and Zach Blodgett netted 11 points.

Frantz Pinard led Suffolk with 13 points.
