Brewer man accused of assaulting woman at Main Street Tavern

BANGOR, Maine — A Brewer man was arrested early Thanksgiving morning after a reported assault at a local bar, police said.

An officer driving by the Tavern on Main Street at 1:35 a.m. witnessed Joel Marsters, 48, and another man standing face to face having a heated conversation, Bangor police Sgt. Cathy Rumsey said.

The officer decided to pull over as it appeared the men were about to fight, Rumsey said. It turned out the other man was upset because Marsters had apparently struck a woman in the parking lot of the bar earlier in the evening.

Through investigation and interviews, police determined Marsters had indeed assaulted the woman, and were only going to issue him a summons, Rumsey said, but he was arrested when he refused to sign the citation.

Marsters was charged with assault and refusing to sign a summons and brought to Penobscot County Jail, and was later released.
