BANGOR, Maine — Author Sanford Phippen will hold a signing for his recently published book, “Sturge: A Memoir,” noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Bookmarcs, 78 Harlow St. The book is dedicated to his lifelong friend, Sturgis Haskins.

Haskins was born and raised in Sorrento and most well-known as a founder of the University of Maine’s Wilde Stein Club, an openly gay student organization started in 1974 and still active today. He was a photographer and a pioneer in gay rights.

The book contains more than 150 pictures and numerous stories and quotes from those who knew Haskins, who died in 2012. The book also contains letters written from Haskins to Phippen while Haskins was living in New York City.
