NEWARK, Del. – Helen W. Moore, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013. Born on May 23, 1934, in Portland, to the late Leo A. and Emily N. Richards.
Helen earned her nursing degree at the Pottsville School of Nursing, in Pottsville, Pa. She went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force, earning the rank of Captain in her tenure. Upon completion of her service, Helen went on to practice nursing at the Veterans Hospital in Elsmere, Del. Helen dedicated much of her free time to helping children learn to read. In addition to tutoring others, she worked to further her own education with her involvement in the University of Delaware’s “Lifelong Learning” program. Helen loved animals; especially her cats. She also enjoyed relaxing with a good book and listening to classical music.
Helen is survived by her husband, Albert L. Moore Jr.; her daughter, Ann Fearn (Kenneth); son, Andrew Moore (Gabriela); her grandson, Peter Daniel; and her sister, Merle “Cookie” Brown. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Whalen, Charles “Porky” Whalen, and David Richards.
Family and Friends are invited to visit 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Doherty Funeral Homes, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Del., with Helen’s Memorial Service beginning at 5:30pm. Interment will take place 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in the chapel at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
