CALAIS, Maine — An employee of a roofing contractor fell off a ladder and was killed while the company was doing work at Washington County Community College, college officials reported Tuesday.

The worker “fell or slipped from a ladder and perished right here on scene,” said college president Joseph Cassidy.

The incident was reported to the Washington County Regional Communications Center about 3:51 p.m. Monday, said center director Joshua Rolfe.

Cassidy declined to identify the name of the contracting business. He referred questions about the identity of the victim to the Calais Police Department.

Officer John Peterson of the Calais Police Department declined to identify the victim. The incident is under investigation with the aid of the state medical examiner, he said.

The accident was reported by an employee of the contracting business, said Cassidy.

The workers were installing a roof on an addition to the one-story Howland Building, which contains shops and classrooms.

“The community here is very saddened and shocked … Our thoughts and prayers certainly go out to the family of the deceased,” said Cassidy.

CORRECTION:

An earlier version of this story requires correction. The worker was killed in a fall from a ladder, not a roof.
