HERMON, Maine — A machine shop in Hermon was damaged by fire on Tuesday morning, officials said.

The blaze at the shop on Pine Tree Road broke out shortly before 7 a.m., according to Hermon Assistant Fire Chief Eric Pelletier.

A passing motorist saw smoke spewing from the building and called 911, Pelletier said.

Crews were on the scene shortly after and were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

Pelletier said the fire started in the rear of the building, and the State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating a cause. The building was empty at the time of the fire.

The assistant chief said the building was heavily damaged.

Crews from Hermon, Hampden, Levant, Carmel and Bangor, along with a tanker truck from the Air National Guard, responded to the fire.
