AUBURN, Maine — A 20-year-old New Gloucester woman was killed on Riverside Drive on Monday morning when her car skidded into the path of an oncoming car, police said.

Tara Chase, a 2011 Lewiston High School graduate, died instantly at the scene of the crash, which occurred on Route 136 between Penley Corner Road and Jordan School Road shortly before 6 a.m., police said.

Police closed that portion of the road during extrication of the two drivers, who were trapped in their cars.

The driver of a southbound Chevy Impala was Leo Leclair, 60, of Auburn; Chase drove a Saturn.

Leclair and his three passengers were taken to Central Maine Medical Center where they are listed in satisfactory condition, police said.

Speed and weather conditions may have been contributing factors in the crash, police said.

All traffic is being rerouted down Penley Corner and Jordan School roads. The road is expected to be closed for most of the morning.

Commuters are urged to seek an alternate travel route this morning and avoid the area.

Auburn police were assisted in their investigation at the scene by a Maine State Police accident reconstruction expert.

Chase’s brother, Jordan, a private in the Maine National Guard, died in 2011 during basic training in Fort Jackson, S.C.
