FAIRFIELD, Maine — A Starks man was killed Wednesday night after a head-on collision on Route 139, police said.
James Murphy, 67, was headed southbound when his Subaru was struck by a northbound pickup driven by Mark Bussell, 37, of Skowhegan, Fairfield police Sgt. Paul St. Amand said Friday.
Bussell’s vehicle crossed the centerline, according to St. Amand. Neither vehicle had passengers.
The sergeant said it’s unclear what caused Bussell’s truck to cross the centerline. Police have yet to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role or if Bussell fell asleep at the wheel.
The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. near the Norridgewock town line, St. Amand said. Rain was falling at the time but road conditions weren’t icy, the sergeant said.
Murphy was pronounced dead at the scene, and Bussell was treated at MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta for injuries not considered life-threatening.
Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.
