FARMINGTON, Maine — Dowtown businesses will celebrate “Cider Monday” on Dec. 2, a fun response to Cyber Monday, one of the biggest online shopping days of the year.

“It’s a simple thank-you to those who spend time in our stores,” organizer Kenny Brechner of Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers said.

Several downtown stores will offer a free cup of apple cider Monday to those who come in to browse or shop, he said.

What’s made from squished “micro soft apple products?” Cider, he said.

“Cider Monday is designed to thank all those who have chosen to shop locally in the ‘bricks and mortar’ stores of their neighborhood instead of purchasing online from some far distant warehouse,” Brechner said in a news release.

Brechner has invited all downtown store owners to join him Monday, he said. Several have confirmed the invitation, including The Calico Patch, Everyday Music, Mooseville, SugarWood Gallery, Willy Whacks Shop, Pins and Needles, Farmington Thrift Store and Mainestone Jewelry. He was waiting Wednesday to hear from others.

The local shops provide human interaction, he said.

“A cup of cider from a server, sure to smile at you and not crash, shelves of holiday gift ideas there to touch and feel, friendly real people to help and the knowledge that proceeds from your purchase stay in your community” are reasons for visiting local shops Monday, Brechner said.

Cider Monday follows Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30.
