DEXTER, Maine — A pharmacist at Rite Aid spooked a would-be robber on Monday night and police continue to search for the suspect, according to authorities.

Dexter police received a call of an attempted armed robbery at Rite Aid pharmacy on Spring Street, along Route 7, at 5:17 p.m. Monday, said Dexter police Officer Allen Emerson.

“The suspect went to the pharmacy and passed a note to the pharmacist indicating that he had a gun and wanted narcotics,” said Emerson.

What the pharmacist did next scared off the suspect.

“The pharmacist took the note, read it, and loudly said something to the effect, ‘You mean to tell me you’re robbing us?’” said Emerson. “He said it loud enough so people around him would hear. [The suspect] got nervous, spun right around and ran off.”

The suspect did not get any narcotics and he did not display a gun, said Emerson. He left on foot through the parking lot.

Maine State Police troopers were canvassing the area with a canine unit, he said. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office also was assisting Dexter police in searching for the man.

Emerson described the suspect as a male in his late 20s to early 30s, between 6-foot-3 and 6-foot-5, with a thinner build, weighing between 170 to 180 pounds. He has brown hair and a goatee and was wearing glasses. He was last seen wearing tan pants, a dark blue baseball cap, gloves, black hooded sweatshirt and a green-and-white plaid jacket.

Police are asking anyone who saw a man running on Free, High or Liberty streets before 5:30 p.m. to call the Dexter Police Department at 924-7622.
