BANGOR, Maine — The retail building under construction in the area of Five Guys Burgers and Fries and the newly opened Sweet Frog on Stillwater Avenue likely will be home to a national mattress seller.

An application for a certificate of occupancy filed with Bangor’s Code Enforcement Department indicates that Mattress Firm, a bedding company with more than 1,340 stores nationwide, plans to move into the new building at 878 Stillwater Ave.

The lion’s share of the retailer’s stores are in southern states, especially Florida and Texas, which have 258 and 305 locations, respectively.

Mattress Firm, which already has a pair of locations in Maine, one in Augusta and a second in Topsham, will join a swell of new businesses on Stillwater Avenue in recent months.

One of its neighbors, Five Guys, opened in March. The other, the frozen yogurt shop Sweet Frog, held its grand opening ceremony last week in the same building as Five Guys.

Closer to Interstate-95 on Stillwater, Hobby Lobby and Buffalo Wild Wings each opened in a new plaza in September. A third building on that site is still waiting to be filled according to the site’s developer Vincent “Vinny” Maietta, president of South Portland-based V&E Enterprises Inc.

He said earlier this week that he is in talks with several large retailers, attempting to determine which business or businesses will move into the space. Interest in the building has been high, he said.

A Mattress Firm spokesperson did not immediately return a message requesting comment Friday.
