3 sent to hospital after Winthrop collision

WINTHROP, Maine — A collision on Route 202 sent three people to the hospital Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Winthrop police Capt. Ryan Frost said an eastbound van driven by Margaret Varney, 54, of Winthrop was attempting to turn left onto Pineland Drive when it was struck by a westbound Ford Taurus driven by Stewart Lucas, 48, of Hallowell.

The crash happened shortly after noon, according to Frost. Varney was carrying one passenger, Ryan Devoy, 15, of Winthrop, while Lucas was the lone occupant in his vehicle.

Neither vehicle was demolished and no extrication was required, Frost said.

All three victims were transported to MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta with injuries not considered life-threatening, Frost said. State police and the Winthrop Fire Department assisted Winthrop police.
