Kielczewski wins IBA title as boxing returns to Portland Expo; West Forks’ Berry remains unbeaten

PORTLAND, Maine — Ryan Kielczewski of Quincy, Mass., won the IBA America’s super featherweight championship in the main event of the first boxing card held at the Portland Exposition Building in two decades Saturday night.

The 24-year-old Kielczewski, known as “The Polish Prince,” won an eight-round unanimous decision over Jose Hernandez of Atlanta to improve his record to 18-0 before a crowd of about nearly 3,000.

The title bout was one of five professional and two amateur fights on the card promoted by Bobby Russo of the Portland Boxing Club.

In other pro fights, PBC middleweight Russell Lamour of Portland improved his record to 6-0 with a unanimous decision over Deivison Ribeiro of Tampa, Fla., while teammate Jorge Abiague of Portland moved to 4-0 with a unanimous four-round decision over Leonel Garcia of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in a bantamweight bout.

Brandon “The Cannon” Berry, a junior welterweight from West Forks, also improved his record to 4-0 by scoring a third-round technical knockout of Paul Souza of Somerville, Mass., while Biddeford’s Jimmy Smith won a first-round TKO of Roberto Brando-Hunt of Hyannis, Mass.
