PORTLAND, Maine — A woman who suffered serious injuries in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 295 on Tuesday has died, police said.

Lois Carson, 80, of Portland, a passenger in one of the vehicles, died early Wednesday morning from her injuries at Maine Medical Center, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

Carson was riding in a Chevrolet Equinox driven by her son, Dennis, 53, of Portland, at the time of the crash, McCausland said.

The accident, which occurred near the Franklin Street exit at 4 p.m., jammed rush-hour traffic along the southbound lanes of I-295 for over three hours.

A 2014 Chevy Cruze driven by Susan Tanzer, 62, of Pennsylvania was struck by a Dodge pickup operated by Jonah King, 25, of South Portland. Tanzer had slowed down while traveling in the right lane.

Carson’s vehicle struck the Cruze and overturned, coming to rest on its side. None of the other people involved in the crash were injured.

The accident remains under investigation.
