LEBANON, Maine — A teenage boy escaped injury Monday evening when his SUV plunged into a swamp in Lebanon, according to officials.
A 17-year-old Acton boy was traveling east on Route 111 around 7:30 p.m. when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel, drifted off the highway and into the swamp, according to Lebanon Rescue Assistant Chief Jason Cole.
Cole said the driver barely missed hitting a telephone pole. His vehicle wound up in about three feet of water.
Passing motorists called for help after seeing the vehicle’s headlights off the roadway.
Cole said when he arrived, he discovered the teen was not seriously injured and was able to get him out of the SUV and onto the side of the road to be checked out.
The teen was evaluated at the scene and did not require transportation to the hospital, Cole said. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
