SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A Newry man was killed early Monday in a one-car crash on the Maine Turnpike, according to Maine State Police.

Jacob Bartholomew, 36, lost control of his car near the South Portland exit as it went off the highway and slammed into a tree and caught fire, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Monday in a press release.

Bartholomew was alone in the car, he said.

About midnight Sunday, police received reports of his car driving the wrong way in the southbound lane of the turnpike in Biddeford, McCausland said. Troopers began searching for Bartholomew’s vehicle.

He apparently used a median crossover between Biddeford and Scarborough to get into the northbound lane and crashed around 12:30 a.m. Monday.
