VINALHAVEN, Maine — A fire destroyed a house Monday afternoon, killing one dog, with a second one missing.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, said Vinalhaven Fire Chief Mac Candage. The chief said he was going to contact the state fire marshal’s office for its assistance.
The fire was called in by a neighbor shortly before 3 p.m. When the first crew arrived, there were flames shooting through the roof at the one-and-a-half story house owned by Dana Blackington on Pequot Road.
No one was home at the time of the fire.
The firefighters had the blaze under control within about a half hour. When crews were able to get into the house, the body of one dog was found. A second dog was reported to have been left in the house but it had not yet been found.
Crews returned to the station by 8 p.m.
