College roundup: Norwich football team rallies past Husson

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — The Norwich University Cadets rallied from a 17-7 third-quarter deficit, aided by two Husson University turnovers, to record a 28-23 football victory Saturday.

A Husson fumble gave the ball to Norwich at the Husson 12 and Al Georgio ran in a touchdown to give Norwich a 21-14 lead late in the third. Norwich picked off a Ryan Stroud pass to set up its next TD, an 85-yard run by Georgio.

Stroud replaced starting QB Joe Seccareccia, who was injured in the first half.

Bryon Jackson paced Husson with 81 yards on 28 carries, including two touchdowns. Ryan Dorso totaled 62 yards, including a 32-yard TD.

Husson is now 5-4 and 4-2 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference while Norwich is 6-3 and 5-1.

MIT 56, MMA 36

At Cambridge, Mass., Peter Williams completed 15 of 18 passes for 264 yards and five touchdowns to carry MIT by the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners of Castine.

Justin Wallace added 150 rushing yards on 26 carries as MIT improved to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the New England Football Conference.

Bill Wetherbee paced MMA with 217 rushing yards on 27 carries and is now MMA’s eighth all-time leading rusher. Michael Fahey chipped in with 170 yards on 31 carries, including a career-high five TDs.

MMA slipped to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the NEFC.

Men’s Basketball

UMM 99, UMA 76

At Machias on Saturday, UMaine-Machias used a balanced scoring effort to beat UM-Augusta.

Elias Gutierrez tallied 23 points with 5 assists, Floyd Higgins had 16 points, Aaron Van Buren and Ben Teer each had 15 points and Erick Andrews 10 points.

AC Ford had 13 assists.

The Moose were led by Jesse Smith with 22 points, Brandon Rogers with 17 and Caleb Mcguire with 11.

Fisher 77, UMFK 74

At Fort Kent on Saturday, Fisher built a 15-point first-half lead and then held on for the the win.

Tyler Shular led Fisher (1-1) with 17 points.

UMFK (1-1) was led by Jorge Matesanz with 16 points while Mike McClung added 13 points, six boards and four blocks.

Women’s Basketball

UMM 76, EMCC 49

At Bangor on Sunday, Kirsti Wright led a balanced effort with 16 points and nine rebounds as the Clippers beat the Golden Eagles.

Emma LeGallais contributed 14 points and eight rebounds while Vanessa Patterson posted 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals for the University of Maine-Machias (2-1). Caroline Proctor grabbed 10 rebounds.

Carolyn Bess scored a team-high 12 points for Eastern Maine Community College (0-3), while Hannah Bess provided nine points and 12 rebounds.

UMA 79, UMM 73

At Machias on Saturday, Jasmine Plummer scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead UM-Augusta by UM-Machias.

Jennifer Lola added 16 points and 12 rebounds for UMA.

Emma LeGallais paced UMM with 19 points while Vanessa Patterson added 16 points and 13 rebounds.
