Bangor man allegedly attempts to steal jacket from Sears, runs from police

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A local man who attempted to steal a Carhartt jacket from Sears on Wednesday is facing a felony theft charge, according to police.

Michael Hughes, 43, also tried to bolt from police and loss-prevention officers, according to Bangor police Sgt. Cathy Rumsey.

Police were dispatched to the Bangor Mall store shortly before 9:30 a.m., Rumsey said.

When loss-prevention officers tried to confront Hughes, he ran out of the store, and police chased him on foot through mall parking lots before he was eventually subdued, Rumsey said.

Hughes’ theft charge was levied to a Class C felony due to prior convictions on his record, and he was also charged with failure to submit to arrest, the sergeant said.

Hughes is being held at the Penobscot County Jail.
