AUGUSTA, Maine — Four people were arrested Wednesday after a burglary at the Maine Smoke Shop on Western Avenue, police said.

Officers responded to the business shortly after 5 a.m. for reported suspicious activity, Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills said.

Police quickly determined the smoke shop had been broken into, and Kelly Strout, 31, and Scott Beckim, 32, both of Augusta, were arrested, Mills said.

Investigative efforts continued throughout the day, and a search warrant was executed at the suspects’ residence, Mills said.

The execution of the warrant led to the arrest of two more suspects, Gladys Fowler, 31, and Scott Coogan, 28, both of Augusta, Mills said.

Beckim was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and violating conditions of release; Strout with burglary, theft and criminal mischief; Coogan with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and violating conditions of release; and Fowler with receiving stolen property, according to Mills.

All four are being held at the Kennebec County Jail.
