College roundup: Saint Joseph’s beats Husson field hockey team in NAC semifinal

STANDISH, Maine — Kelsey Dumond and Carley Denis each scored a goal to lift Saint Joseph’s by Husson University 2-1 in a North Atlantic Conference field hockey semifinal Wednesday.

The Monks advanced to Saturday’s NAC final at 4:30 p.m. against top-ranked Castleton.

After a scoreless first half, Saint Joseph’s scored 2:07 into the second half when Dumond pushed in a rebound from an Amanda Celata shot. Denis added the second goal at the 55:29 mark with a booming shot from just inside the circle in the left slot off a short Celata feed.

Husson cut the lead to 2-1 at the 60th minute when Britt Mellor scored off a Taylor Lovley dish on a penalty corner play.

In goal, Husson’s Maicee Gustin made seven saves while Saint Joseph’s Emma Astbury didn’t have to make a save.

Saint Joseph’s is now 15-3 and Husson finished at 10-8.

Castleton 7, UMF 0

At Castleton, Vt., Blake Wardwell and Sarah Heffernan each had a pair of goals while Rachel Preusser notched a goal and dished off two assists to lead Castleton State by UMaine-Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference semifinal.

Castleton improved to 13-6 and UMF finished at 8-7.

Castleton’s Jess Galatioto finished with three saves and UMF’s Curran Brierley made seven.

Men’s Soccer

Colby-Sawyer 1, MMA 0

At Castine, Maine Maritime and Colby-Sawyer battled scoreless for 110 minutes before the Chargers prevailed in the shootout, 4-3, in a North Atlantic Conference semifinal match.

The Chargers advanced to Saturday’s championship game against Thomas, a 2-0 winner of Castleton.

Colby-Sawyer is now 10-7-2 while MMA finished at 11-5-2.

Rick Prindiville, Zach Anderson, Carlton Wheeler-Omiunu and Andrew Clothier made penalty kicks for Colby-Sawyer.

Nicholas George, Bryan Soucy and Matt Leblanc converted penalty kicks for MMA.
