BREWER, Maine — A Christmas present will come a few weeks early for area veterans and military personnel as Schooner’s Seafood & Steakhouse offers its traditional Veterans Day meal.

According to owner Mike Kessock, from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 11, Schooner’s will offer veterans a free meal from the “special Veterans Day menu,” which will include “a turkey dinner with all the fixings.” The offer is available to active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve military personnel and retired veterans with the appropriate ID.

Schooner’s has a long-standing tradition of hosting a Veterans Day dinner. “I’ve got a very soft spot in my heart for veterans,” said Kessock, a Navy pilot for six years. His father, Mike, spent 26 years in the Air Force, including some years stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor.

Of his Navy service, “it was a tough six years, but in many ways it was the best six years of my life,” Kessock recalled. “The guys in my squadron were a great bunch of guys.”

General Manager Mason Tripp would not be surprised if “at least 400” veterans dine at Schooner’s on Veterans Day; “we usually have 350 [who have] reserved [a table] before they come in.”

Over the years Kessock has found that veterans “are very appreciative” of the free meal. “You get to listen to some of their stories,” he said. “What some of these veterans have gone through is incredible.”
