Barbara L. Jewell

HAMPDEN and BANGOR – Barbara Law Jewell, 90, wife of the late Frank W Jewell, died November 1, 2013 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. She was born at home on Kelly’s Lane in Hampden on December 5, 1922, the daughter of Henry E and Mary A (Trudeau) Law.

She graduated from Brewer High School, Washington State Normal School (now University of Maine Machias), and the University of Maine Orono. She taught school at the Eddington Bend School, Washington Street School in Brewer, and the remainder of her teaching career was spent at Weatherbee and McGraw Schools in Hampden. She was a faithful volunteer at the McGraw School for several years following her retirement. Barbara was a Life Member and Past President of the Daniel E Geaghan Post #98 Auxiliary of Brewer. She served 2 years in the U.S. Navy (Waves) during WWII. She belonged to the Hampden Historical Society and was an enthusiastic member of the Twin City Cloggers and later with the senior group, The Reflections, at the Bangor Senior Center. Barbara was also a core member of the Bangor Troop Greeters and enjoyed meeting and greeting the troops at all hours of the day or night. She was also a communicant and past Ecumenical Minister at St Matthews Church in Hampden. She was a valued board member of the Pine Tree Chapter of the Maine Officers Association of America (MOAA). Barbara and Frank were members of several square dance clubs, travel trailer, and motor home clubs. They spent many years during retirement traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada before settling for 12 years in the winter months at Grandma’s Grove RV Park in LaBelle, Florida, where they made many lasting friendships.

She is survived by daughters, Donna Roberts of Bangor, Catherine Jewell and husband, Dean Mallar of Old Town, son, Thomas Jewell and wife, Judy of Hampden, her grandchildren, Jennifer Roberts of Mesa, Arizona, Heather Corson-Alarcon and husband, Marlon Alarcon of Seoul, South Korea, Lani (Corson) Ziegler and husband, Kenneth Ziegler of Astoria, New York, Meghan (Jewell) Baker of Hampden, Benjamin Jewell of Boston, Mass; great-grandchildren, Ashleigh and Aubrey Baker, Elizabeth Anne Alarcon, and many special nieces and nephews; 2 sisters, Dorothy Rasmussen of River Rouge, Michigan, and M Judith Frey and husband, Ronald of Essex Junction, Vermont, a sister-in-law, Susan (Campbell) Law of Louisville, Kentucky, and many dear lifelong friends. Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Frank, in 2007, a son, Robert Frank Jewell in 1969, 2 brothers, Richard Law, Edmund Law and his wife, Joan (Davitt) Law, a niece, Dr Nancy Law, and nephew, Edmund Rasmussen.

Barbara was a well-loved elementary school teacher who touched many young lives in the Brewer and Hampden school systems. She thoroughly enjoyed her many years as a teacher and continued to be a teaching grandmother to her beloved grandchildren with whom she spent countless hours.

Family and friends may visit 4 to 6 pm Friday, November 8, 2013, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am Saturday, November 9, 2013 at St Paul the Apostle Parish, St Matthew’s Catholic Church, 70 Western Avenue, Hampden. Interment with military honors will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden.
