Joseph ‘Joe’ ‘Sonny’ ‘Bamp’ S. Sproul Jr.

CHERRYFIELD – Joseph “Joe” “Sonny” “Bamp” S. Sproul Jr. died suddenly Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, surrounded by family. He was born Dec. 25, 1932, to Coris and Joseph Sproul in Harrington.
Joe was a member of Cherryfield Academy, class of 1951. He served in the U.S. Army Airborne Division, as well as serving as Assistant Chief in the Cherryfield Fire Dept and the Cherryfield Town Patrol. He was a Trustee for the Cherryfield Ambulance for more than 25 years, a Fire Warden, a member of the Cherryfield American Legion Post No. 8, Narraguagus/Cherryfield Historical Society, and Cherryfield Alumni Association. He was the President of the Small Cemetery Association and he held many positions for the Town including Constable for Cherryfield Elementary School, code enforcement officer, and dog warden. Joe owned and operated a construction company for many years, from which he received the CB handle “One Armed Bandit.” He loved spending time with his family and looked forward to the holidays. He could often be found hanging out at the Maine Grocer on the liars’ bench, and now a days at the North Street Café. He loved puttering with his tools in the barn and could often be found tinkering under the hood of an old car or putting an exhaust on an old truck. He could always be relied upon to make a trip to the grade school to deliver forgotten items for his granddaughters. He spent nearly every Friday night for years monitoring Beano at the American Legion. He loved the Town of Cherryfield.
Joe is survived by wife, Phylis Mayhew Sproul who he married Feb. 14, 1953; son, Joe and his wife, Bonnie; son, Billy and his wife, Lesa; sisters, Ruth Bucci, and Roberta “Bobbi” Beal; brother-in-law, Lester Foster; and granddaughters, Kristina Devine and her husband, Joe, Maeve Perry, Joyce McLaughlin and husband, Joe, Shandi Bickford, and Megan and Casey Nevells. In addition he leaves behind great-grandchildren, Nicole Devine, Jaden Pusey, Serenity “Reni,” Teagen, and Sophie McLaughlin. Special nephews are Ira Richardson and wife, Donna, Carl Mayhew and his wife, Loretta, Bob Sproul and wife, Sandy, and Joe Foster. And many more extended family and close personal friends and neighbors. Joe was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Richard “Dickie” Sproul, and Clyde Tenan; sisters, Audrey Sproul, Rebecca “Becky” Foster, and Jean Norton; nephews, George Beal, and David Norton; nieces, Cindy Beal Deniger, and Barbara Richardson Wooster; brothers-in-law, Robert and Dana Mayhew and Karl Richardson; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Mayhew Richardson.
Viewing will be noon Saturday, Nov. 2, at the American Legion Hall in Cherryfield, with services at 1 p.m., officiated by Pastor Max Merrill. Light refreshments will be served immediately following. Arrangements provided by McClure Family Funeral Home in Machias.
