PORTLAND, Maine — A collection of experts and entrepreneurs on Wednesday morning will tackle some of the challenges facing Maine’s economy at an event BDN Maine is hosting at the University of Southern Maine.

The event — MaineFocus: Solutions for Maine’s Economy — will take place at USM’s Abromson Center from 7:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Four panels will discuss questions such as how to improve Maine’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, how to increase Maine’s role in the global economy and what the education and workforce solutions are to growing Maine’s economy.

Speakers include Tanya Emery, Bangor’s director of community and economic development; James Knight, CEO of Orono-based Pelletco; Greg Mitchell, Portland’s director of economic development; Luke Livingston, CEO of Baxter Brewing Co.; Charles Colgan, a professor at USM’s Muskie School for Public Service; Don Gooding, executive director of the Maine Center for Entrepreneurial Development; and John Baldacci, former Maine governor and senior advisor for economic development and government relations at Pierce Atwood.

“This MaineFocus conference of business leaders from across the state will be a unique opportunity to share economic insights and solutions with the public, the business community and students,” said Pat Lemieux, producer of events for BDN Maine.

There also will be a panel discussing the Bangor Daily News’ MaineFocus initiative, which has as its goal to explore and foster meaningful conversation on the solutions to the state’s economic problems, rather than focusing on the problems. The morning conference is expected to be the first of a series of events that will revolve around the MaineFocus project.
