The quest for Eastern Maine high school playoff berths and positioning came down to the final games of the final regular-season weekend Saturday afternoon — as well as a coin flip.
Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield coach Tom Bertrand called tails Saturday morning to win a coin flip with Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln and the No. 2 seed for the Little Ten Conference Class D playoffs.
The coin flip was required because both teams finished 7-1, did not play each other, played identical schedules and lost to undefeated No. 1 seed Bucksport — leaving them tied in all other tiebreakers.
By winning the coin flip, MCI will join Bucksport in receiving a first-round bye for the six-team LTC playoffs that begin next Friday night.
Mattanawcook will host No. 6 Washington Academy of East Machias in a first-round game Friday night after WA earned the final playoff berth to be determined in Eastern Maine with a 35-33 victory at No. 7 Mount View of Thorndike on Saturday afternoon.
Mount View (3-5) entered the game ahead of WA in the Crabtree point ratings, but the victory earned coach Barry Terrill’s Raiders (3-5) its second straight playoff berth in just three years of varsity competition.
Next weekend’s other LTC quarterfinal sends No. 5 Dexter (3-5) to No. 4 Orono (5-3).
In Eastern A, top-ranked Cheverus (8-0) and No. 2 Portland (7-1) earned byes, while No. 3 Windham will host No. 6 Edward Little of Auburn (3-5) and No. 4 Bangor (4-4) will host No. 5 Lewiston (3-5).
The Bangor-Lewiston game, to be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cameron Stadium, will be a rematch of a Week 7 clash at Lewiston in which Bangor took the lead in the final minute only for Lewiston to score in the final seconds for a 31-29 win.
No. 1 Brunswick and No. 2 Cony of Augusta, both 6-2, earned Eastern B byes, with No. 6 Hampden Academy (5-3) at No. 3 Messalonskee of Oakland (5-3) and No. 5 Skowhegan (4-4) at No. 4 Mt. Blue of Farmington (5-3) in first-round games.
In Class C, Waterville (7-1) scored with 20.3 seconds left to defeat Winslow 25-21 in their Battle of the Bridge game Saturday, but Winslow (7-1) will be seeded first and Waterville second for postseason play. Both will receive a first-round bye.
Quarterfinals next Friday night will send No. 6 Old Town (4-4) to No. 3 Mount
Desert Island of Bar Harbor (6-2) and No. 5 Belfast (5-3) to No. 4 Foxcroft Academy (5-3).
