Two hotly anticipated restaurants opened in the Queen City this week. Verve Burritos, which owners Abe and Heather Furth announced last year it would be opening another location in downtown Bangor in addition to its flagship Orono eatery, began serving burritos, quesadillas, salads, breakfast burritos and other quick Mexican treats on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Current hours 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily at 89 Main St.

Also open is Whistling Pig Smokehouse, a new barbecue establishment located at 735 Main St., near the Bangor-Hampden line. Brisket, pulled pork, ribs and peach cobbler are just some of the dishes available at the family-friendly Southern-style eatery. Hours are 4-9 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.

Portland Beer Week

The first week of November means fall is fading fast. The best thing to do before winter descends is drink more beer. When paired with food at the Maine Brewer’s Kitchen it’s all the tastier. Part of Portland Beer Week, this event pairs 15 Maine breweries with 15 Maine restaurants. Find out the best food for what ales you. Combinations include Bunker Brewing and Eventide Oyster Co. — a match made in hop heaven. Raise a glass and a plate for this Maine Brewers Guild fundraiser, 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3., at Port City Music Hall, Portland. Cost is $80. For information, call 800-745-3000 or visit portlandbeerweek.org.
