College roundup: Seccareccia, Stroud lift Husson football team past Becker

BANGOR — Joe Seccareccia of Bangor completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Dover-Foxcroft’s Ryan Stroud with 1:09 remaining as the Husson University Eagles withstood an 18-point, fourth-quarter barrage on Saturday to edge the Becker College Hawks 19-18 in football action at the Winkin Complex Saturday.

Husson (4-2, 3-0 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference) built a 13-0 first-quarter lead. Seccareccia (6-for-15 passing, 68 yards) scored on a 2-yard run and Bryron Jackson (23 carries, 73 yards) had a 7-yard touchdown scamper.

Becker (1-5) came storming back late. Robert Baker hit Shaun Llewellyn on a 4-yard TD pass, then hit Brandon Mulling on a 31-yard scoring strike.

The Hawks took the lead with 4:08 to play when Romario Vincent recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, but the Eagles marched 59 yards on nine plays for the clincher.

Coast Guard 40, MMA 0

At New London, Conn., Derek Victory completed 21 of 23 passes for 186 yards and two scores and the Cadets (3-4) gained 379 yards through the air in posting a New England Football Conference shutout of the Mariners on Saturday.

Michael Fahey led the offense for Maine Maritime Academy of Castine with 18 carries for 111 yards. Billy Wetherbee netted 68 yards on 21 carries.

Chase Hutchinson paced the Mariners (0-5) with eight tackles.

Field Hockey

Maine splits weekend

At Fairfield, Conn., Danielle Aviani scored two of her team’s five first-half goals Saturday as the Maine beat Fairfield 5-1 on Saturday. On Sunday in Orono, Yale beat Maine 4-3 in overtime.

Cassidy Svetek, Abbey Gutowski and Holly Stewart tallied a goal apiece for the University of Maine. Marissa Shaw notched three assists while Stewart added one. Natasha Ford made six saves.

On Sunday, Yale’s Nicole Wells scored in overtime to give Yale the victory after Maine had rallied from a two-goal deficit.

Annabelle Hamilton and Holly Steward each recorded a goal and an assist for Maine (9-7 overall, 2-2 America East).

Cassidy Svetek added a goal for Maine and goalkeeper Natasha Ford finished with eight saves.

Husson 4, UMF 1

At Bangor on Sunday, Liz Noddin and Taylor Lovely each scored two goals, one apiece in each half, to lift Husson (9-5 overall, 7-0 NAC) to victory.

Sabrina Vaillancourt, Noddin, and Lovely each added an assist.

Kashley Weymouth scored for UMF.

Men’s Soccer

UMFK 2, Berkeley 1

At Newark, N.J., Kennard Brown scored his second goal of the game 14 minutes into the second half to snap a 1-1 tie and lift the Bengals to victory on Saturday.

Daniel Blackwood and Matthew Dunn assisted on Brown’s goal in the first half for the University of Maine-Fort Kent (13-2). Jamie Cleland made six saves.

William Cardenas scored on a second-half penalty kick for Berkeley College (6-6-2). Pierce Langlois made seven saves.

Thomas 4, Husson 0

At Waterville on Saturday, Mikkail Crockwell and Winston Trott combined on the shutout with four saves as the Terriers earned the North Atlantic Conference win.

Dakota Duplissie, Tre Ming, Kristian Pettersson and Mikal Simmons scored a goal apiece for Thomas College (7-6-1, 4-2 NAC). Joshua Phelps provided two assists and Duplissie had one for the Terriers.

Brian Potter made eight saves for Husson University of Bangor (5-6-3, 5-1-2 NAC).

Eagle keeper Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) stopped 8 shots.

UMF 1, Johnson State 0

At Johnson, Vt., Ibrahim Achekh found the back of the net just with two minutes left in regulation Saturday, lifting the Beavers to a North Atlantic Conference win over Johnson State.

Achekh scored off a Ryan Fairbanks assist for the University of Maine-Farmington (3-10-1, 1-4-1 NAC). Ronie Morales and Derek Reilly combined for five saves.

Johnson State (0-14-0, 0-8-0 NAC) got five saves from Ryan Belen.

Women’s Soccer

UMFK 7 UMPI 0

At Fort Kent on Sunday, Katherine Ferland racked up four goals and added an assist to lead UMaine-Fort Kent by UM-Presque Isle for its 11th straight win while improving to 13-1.

Brianna Mills, Emma Ashby and Ariane Leberge-Pelletier each added a goal for UMFK while goalies Kimika Forbes and Jessica Kozachuk combined on four saves on four shots.

Goalie Amanda Larrabee finished with 15 saves on 22 shots for 3-9-1 UMFK.

Maine 1, New Hampshire 0

At Durham, N.H., Jordan Pellerin of Waterville scored on the rebound of her own shot with 3:37 remaining Sunday, lifting the Black Bears to an America East victory over the Wildcats.

Lauren Swant made five saves for the University of Maine, which improved to 7-4-3.

Mimi Borkan had four saves for New Hampshire (3-5-5).

Husson 1, Thomas 0

At Waterville on Saturday, Courtney Hill converted a cross from Sydney Costa in the 71st minute, providing the Eagles with the game’s only goal in a North Atlantic Conference victory over the Terriers.

Jess Poulin posted the shutout for Husson University fo Bangor (7-8-1, 4-3-1 NAC).

Kate Thibodeau logged six saves for Thomas (3-11, 1-6 NAC).

UMF 3, Johnson State 0

At Johnson, Vt., Kayla Tuttle registered a hat trick to power the Beavers to a North Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday.

Alexandra Crocker and Bridget Humphrey contributed assists for the University of Maine-Farmington (7-6-2, 6-1-0 NAC). Beth Lebel and Amy Jones had one save between them.

Amber McCullock came up with 17 saves for Johnson State (6-8-0, 3-5-0 NAC).
