VASSALBORO, Maine — Robbie Watson of Fort Fairfield and Jenna Hallett of Presque Isle captured their respective division titles Saturday during the Maine Individual Golf State Championships at Natanis Golf Course.
Watson fired a 1-under-par 71 to register a five-stroke victory in the Class C competition, while Hallett turned in a 4-over 76 to share the girls individual title with Bailey Plourde of Lincoln Academy of Newcastle.
In Class A, Cam Letourneau of Oxford Hills High School in South Paris and Chris Billings of Cheverus High in Portland emerged as co-champions after shooting 3-over-par 75s.
Luke Ruffing of Maranacook High in Readfield claimed top honors in Class B, matching Watson for the day’s best round with a 71.
In the Class C event, Watson was on target as he played Natanis for the second time in eight days. His effort was two strokes better than the 73 he recorded playing in last week’s state team championships in which coach Larry Gardner’s squad finished fifth.
Mitch Lorenz of Class C team champion Saint Dominic Academy of Auburn was among three players who tied for second place, joining Adam Hachey of Winthrop and Chandler Longfellow of Wiscasset at 76.
Nick Garfield of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln wound up in a tie for fourth place alongside Robert Vickerson of Monmouth Academy, Taylor Morang of Winthrop and Mike Richard of Saint Dominic.
The girls’ crown was shared by Hallett and Plourde, who both recorded a 76. Hallett improved by six strokes from her performance of the previous week when she was the low scorer on Presque Isle’s fourth-place team while Plourde sliced 10 strokes from her state-team score.
Megan Flanigan of Limestone Community School/Maine School of Science and Mathematics took third place with a 78, while two-time individual runner-up Monica Austin of Yarmouth (81) and Van Nguyen of Fryeburg Academy rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth.
In Class B, Ruffing demonstrated why he has been one of the hottest high school golfers in the state this fall.
After finishing tied for second place in 2012, Ruffing shot a 1-under-par 71 to match the score from the team championship.
Seward Matel of Lincoln Academy was three strokes back to claim the runner-up honor, while defending champion Reese McFarlane of Cape Elizabeth and Daulton Wickenden of Camden Hills High in Rockport tied for third at 75.
Gavin Dugas of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and Erik Larrabee of Mount View in Thorndike shared fifth place with 78s.
The players were tightly bunched in Class A, but it was Letourneau and Billings whose 75s led the way for the co-champion designation.
Nick Mazurek of Oceanside High of Rockland/Thomaston tied for third with Brunswick’s Derek Devereaux, while Drew Powell of Bangor was among four players deadlocked in fifth place at 77. Also tied for fifth were Joe Lesniak of Flamouth, Will Barlock of Deering High in Portland and Tyler O’Connor of Mount Ararat in Topsham.
