ROCHESTER, N.H. – Alan B. Bemis, formerly of Pittsfield, died Oct. 16, 2013, at Massachusetts General Hospital after a four year battle with leukemia. Born Jan. 6, 1949, in Bangor, to Manley and Pauline Bemis, he graduated from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield.
Police work was always his principal interest. He studied criminal justice at St. Petersburg Junior College in Florida and graduated from Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro. After a stint in the U.S. Army, Al became a police officer in Skowhegan. He also served as an officer in Lubec and later in Pittsfield. There, he was also very involved as a Captain of the volunteer fire department for many years. He also worked as an auto salesman in New Hampshire. In his first run for statewide office, Al won a seat in the New Hampshire State Legislature and served a two year term. He also served six years as a Rochester Police Commissioner. His term would have ended in December 2013.
Al leaves a sister, Betty Allison of Wellfleet Cape Cod, Mass.; and a brother, Carlton Bemis of Augusta.
Visitation will be noon-2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at R. M. Edgerly & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home following the hours. Burial will be at Village Cemetery, Pittsfield, at a later date.
