HIRAM, Maine — A teenage girl was killed Wednesday evening and two teenage boys were injured in a single-vehicle accident in Hiram, police said.

Alexia Valente, 16, of Hiram, a student at Sacopee Valley High School, lost control of her 1998 Nissan Sentra on a curve on River Road shortly after 7 p.m., according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Valente’s passengers, Christopher Eagles, 17, and Austin Lewis, 16, both of Baldwin, suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and were treated at Maine Medical Center, McCausland said. The boys are also Sacopee students.

McCausland said speed was a major factor in the accident, and there is no indication the teens were wearing seat belts. Valente lived on River Road, he added.

Valente’s vehicle struck a tree on the driver’s side after she lost control on the curve, McCausland said. He did not indicate how fast the car was going, but the speed limit on River Road is 45 mph.

Valente was pronounced dead at the scene.
