West Virginia Tech men’s soccer team knocks off UM-Fort Kent


CHARLESTON, W. Va. — West Virginia Tech edged the University of Maine-Fort Kent Bengals 4-3 in a men’s soccer matchup Monday of the nation’s top two ranked teams In the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

UMFK, ranked No. 1, suffered its first loss of the season and just its second in two years of regular season play.

UMFK (12-1-0) scored on a pair of first-half goals by Jamie Reed, however WVU Tech (14-2-1) answered with goals by Joe Jackson and Dennis Fuerst in the 29th and 40th minutes to tie the game at the break.

After WVU Tech had taken the lead in the 60th minute on Glenroy Miller’s goal, UMFK’s Justin Soontiens scored off Ben Kluvers second assist to tie the match. WVU Tech’s Akeil Williams then converted a corner kick off a header with just six seconds left.

Jamie Cleland took his first career loss in goal for UMFK making seven saves on 13 WVU Tech shots while Richard Goss made four saves on seven UMFK shots for the winners.

Women’s Soccer

UMFK 2, Point Park 0

At Pittsburgh, Ariane Leberge-Pelletier scored in the fifth minute on a through ball by Marie-Laurence Montagne and Katherine Ferland added an insurance goal in the 31st minute to give UMaine-Fort Kent the victory.

Goalkeeper Kimika Forbes made nine saves for 11-1 UMFK and Erica Roney finished with eight for 5-9 Point Park.
