WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Mike Michaud has signed a discharge petition in order to allow an up or down vote on a continuing resolution to fund the government, according to a press release issued Saturday by his office.

A discharge petition is a special congressional procedure that allows a majority of members to bypass the Speaker of the House and force a vote on a bill, the release said.

“We’ll finally get a vote to end the shutdown if all the members who say they would vote to reopen the government sign this petition,” Michaud said. “This shutdown is having a real impact on our economy and on millions of Americans, but it will get worse if it’s allowed to continue. I urge all of my colleagues to sign this petition and stop playing games with our nation’s economy.”

There have been seven successful discharge petitions over the last 30 years, according to a Congressional Research Service study. Twelve measures were allowed to be brought to the House floor even before the discharge petition reached the required 218 signatures.
