ELLSWORTH, Maine — A former Swan’s Island resident has been charged with three counts of gross sexual assault and four counts of unlawful sexual conduct.
In April 2011, an investigation of William G. Laws Jr., 53, began when the victim, who was under the age of 15 at the time of the alleged incidents, reported the sex offenses to the Swan’s Island Police.
The first incident occurred at Swan’s Island in December 2009 and the offenses persisted into 2010, according to court documents.
Laws was questioned by police while seeking care at the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, according to the documents. He told police that he planned to go to South Carolina after he was released from the hospital, which he did before he could be arrested and indicted.
Two years later, authorities tracked him down in South Carolina and extradited him to Hancock County, according to prosecutor Mary Kellett.
He was arrested Sept. 10, 2013 and pleaded not guilty to all seven counts.
He is due in court Oct. 18.
Laws is being held at Hancock County Jail where bail was set at $25,000 cash or $50,000 surety. A condition of his release is that he cannot return to Swan’s Island.
Laws’ attorney could not be immediately reached for comment.
