BANGOR, Maine — Tanya Emery, who has been filling in as Bangor’s director of economic development, will have “interim” scratched out of her title and officially head the department, the city announced Thursday.

The promotion comes about two years after Emery came to Bangor as a business development specialist, working to attract, keep and expand businesses in Bangor. She took on the role of interim director in June after then-director Rosie Vanadestine announced she would be leaving her post to take over as executive director of the Kennebec Valley Council of Governments.

“Tanya has brought energy and creativity to our economic development efforts and has been very successful completing projects in Bangor,” City Manager Cathy Conlow said Thursday. “Her team approach and focus on customer service, both internally and externally, have already helped to improve the development process in Bangor.”

Emery’s appointment is subject to City Council approval during an Oct. 16 meeting. Her annual salary will be about $81,000, according to Conlow.

Prior to coming to Bangor, Emery worked across the Penobscot River as Brewer’s economic development deputy director. She spent five years in that position after five years working for Eastern Maine Development Corp.

A Hampden native, Emery attended Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., earning a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Emery also serves on the SAD 22 school board, which includes Hampden, Newburgh, Winterport and Frankfort, the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce board and Eastern Maine Medical Center Citizens Advisory Council, among other organizations.
