Doughnut truck opens in Portland, bistro owners use crowdfunding for new bakery

Make a dash for doughnuts

For further evidence that doughnuts have kicked cupcakes to the curb, Urban Sugar Mobile Cafe pulls into Portland this month. The doughnut and coffee food truck recently launched its sweet and savory treats and can be found roaming the city. Husband and wife team Valeri and Kevin Sandes are making minidoughnuts hot and fresh. You pick the toppings, from bacon and chocolate ganache to lemon and lavender.

“Whether it’s 1950 or 2013, doughnuts are a very popular thing,” Valeri said. “It takes you back to being a kid.”

A piece of the pie

Fans of dearly departed Rockland restaurant Lily Bistro can be a part of owners Bob and Lynette Krajewski’s latest effort: A crowdfunding effort to open a wood-fired bakery and pizza shop in Rockland. Launched on Sept. 26, the Kickstarter campaign aims to raise $50,000 in 23 days to fund Community Oven. As it says on the campaign page, their vision is to create a common hearth for Rockland, where they will serve pizza and bread, and also offer a “family meal” subscription-based meal plan that can serve groups of people once a week. The campaign runs through Oct. 19, and donations can be made at kickstarter.com.

Cup of love

Learn more about single-origin coffee and the proper way to sip, slurp and sniff your way through a cupping every Friday at Tandem Coffee Roasters in East Bayside. The Portland roastery always has a new and exotic bean on brew. Cuppings are held at noon Fridays at Tandem Coffee Roasters, 122 Anderson St. in Portland.

Taste of Thomaston to feature local food and wine

Knox Museum will top off its 2013 summer season of community events on Saturday, Oct. 12, with Taste of Thomaston, a food and wine festival celebrating local chefs, vintners, cheese artisans, brewers, fishermen, farmers and more. The event will be held rain or shine in a heated tent on the grounds of Montpelier, the big white house just off Route 1 at the turn to St. George in Thomaston. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for those ages 21-35 and for seniors 62 and older, and free for museum members. The tent opens at 11 a.m. and the tasting continues until 2 p.m. Only guests 21 or older will be admitted to the tent.

Montpelier itself will be decorated for harvest season for the very first time, and will be open for free for guests to wander through nine rooms on their own and view the decorations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, and 1-4 p.m. Sunday-Monday, Oct. 13-14.

Maine’s “apple whisperer” spreads the word

Apple savant John Bunker shares his knowledge of heirloom apples, and the history of autumn’s supreme fruit, 4-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Rosemont Produce Co., 5 Commercial St., Portland. The author of “Not Far From the Trees: A Brief History of the Apples and the Orchards of Palermo Maine 1804-2004” will be slicing and dicing the fruit and its ties to Maine. The event is free.
