Talk on Islam to kick off lecture series at Husson

BANGOR, Maine — Husson University’s Sawyer Library and the Bangor Public Library are sponsoring “The World at Your Library: A Foreign Policy Lecture Series” in October.

Robert Morrison, associate professor of religion at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, will lead off the series with his presentation, “Thinking About Islam,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Richard E. Dyke Center for Family Business on the Husson campus. Morrison’s lecture will explain how Islam challenges many peoples’ understanding of religion. The importance of cultural context, including an understanding of how Islam functions within a given country, region, or scenario, also will be addressed.

“The Chinese Intelligence Network” will be the topic of discussion led by Ron Jarvella at 7 p.m., Oct. 22. This presentation will consider the intelligence apparatus of mainland China including how it is structured, how it operates and what it is after.

Scott Erb will talk about the “Social Media Revolution” at 7 p.m., Oct. 29 The lecture will examine the rise of social media, the power of the information revolution and how computers and new technology are transforming life across the world and at home.

This series was made possible by a partnership grant from the Maine Humanities Council and the Mid-Coast Forum on Foreign Relations. It will feature presentations by Maine-based experts, scholars and practitioners on critical international issues. according to a press release issued by Husson.
