LEWISTON, Maine — The first annual Battle of the Bears Ice Hockey Classic will take place noon Saturday, at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston when former University of Maine hockey players will take on the Boston Bruins alumni.
Comedian Bob Marley will be the warm-up act beginning at 11:45 a.m.
The proceeds will benefit the University of Maine’s hockey program, the Maine State Trooper Foundation and the Portland Boxing Club.
Longtime University of Maine booster Frank Jordan, who will coach the Maine alums, said in addition to raising money for the three organizations, the game is also meant to reestablish ties between the Maine hockey program and ex-players who had felt “alienated” in recent years.
First-year Maine coach Red Gendron, who held an alumni gathering for ex-players and fans in August, will be on hand.
Among those expected to suit up for the Black Bears will be Bob Corkum, Cal Ingraham, Chris Imes, David Capuano, Eric and Jason Weinrich, Kent Salfi, Mike Golden, Eric Fenton, Peter Metcalf, Dave MacIsaac, Jeff Libby, Jacque Rodrigue, Eric Turgeon, Dave Wensley, Dan Kerluke, Bret Tyler, Reg Cardinal, Mike Morrison and Blair Allison. Mike Williams and Javier Gorriti will help Jordan coach the team.
The Bruins will be coached by Hall of Fame defenseman Brad Park. Headlining the Bruins roster will be Hall-of-Famer Ray Bourque, Terry O’Reilly, Rick Middleton, Kenny Linesman, Bob and Tim Sweeney, Andy Brickley, Reggie Lemelin and former Black Bear Bob Beers.
There will also be a post-game concert provided by the Don Campbell Band and Lyle Divinsky and Model Airplane in the Colisee parking lot.
Tickets are $18 and $15 for seniors (60 and over) and kids/students (18-under) along with families of at least four.
It will be $12.50 for groups of 10 or more and free for children two and under.
