PORTLAND, Maine — The Casco Bay Bridge closed in the northern direction at 7:17 p.m. to all traffic. “There is a suicidal person on the bridge,” said South Portland Lt. Tom Simonds. All inbound traffic was rerouted to the Veterans Memorial Bridge.

The incident started after 5 p.m. and was handled by Portland police. A white, middle-aged man in a red baseball jacket and beard was seen talking to police with his elbows hooked over the railing at 5:15 p.m. The scene frustrated commuters heading into the city at rush hour. A cyclist lifted his bike over the concrete divider to continue his journey against traffic.

As of 8:10 pm, both north and southbound lanes of the Casco Bay Bridge were open to traffic. According to South Portland police the incident ended without injury. Portland police would release no details until Thursday morning.
