Bicyclist struck by car, suffers head injury in Rockport

By Stephen Betts, BDN Staff

ROCKPORT, Maine — A 54-year-old bicyclist suffered a head injury Friday after she was struck by a car, according to local police.

Mary Young of Rockport was riding her bicycle on Camden Street heading north when a 2004 Mazda sedan driven by Jonathan Eddy of Rockport struck her bicycle from behind, according to Rockport Police Officer and Administrative Assistant Craig Cooley. Young was thrown onto the windshield and then landed in a ditch, Cooley said.

Eddy told police that he glanced away for a second and the next thing he knew, Young was on his hood.

The front tire to the car was punctured by the bicycle.

Eddy was issued a summons for driving to endanger, Cooley said.

The bicyclist was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. A hospital official was unable to provide a condition for Young on Tuesday.
